some quotes about disability

 Bill Clinton-
"New information and communications technologies can improve the quality of life for  people with disabilities, but only if such technologies are designed from the beginning so that everyone can use them".

Georgiann Baldino-
"We all have a disability of some kind; all are lacking in one way or another. Saul has an injury to his leg. What if his personality was deformed? How much worse if his soul was lame? Preachers or teachers look for the good in all of us. (Bless them for doing so.) I don't see a cripple. I haven't met anyone yet who isn't handicapped in some way. So what's the big deal? Don't hide your deformity. Wear it like a Purple Heart."

Martina Navratilova-
“Disability is a matter of perception. If you can do just one thing well, you're needed by someone.”

Lawrence Bixby-
"Each handicap is like a hurdle in a steeplechase, and when you ride up to it, if you throw your heart over, the horse will go along, too."

Scott Hamilton-
"The only disability in life is a bad attitude. "

Neil Marcus-
"“Disability is not a brave struggle or ‘courage in the face of adversity.’ Disability is an art. It’s an ingenious way to live.”

Robert M. Hensel-
"We, the one's who are challenged, need to be heard. To be seen not as a disability, but as a person who has, and will continue to bloom. To be seen not only as a handicap, but as a well intact human being".

Mary McAleese-
"People with disabilities have abilities too and this is what this course is all about, making sure that those abilities blossom and shine so that all the dreams you have can come true"

 Winston Churchill-
"Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference"

Helen Keller-
"I thank God for my handicaps, for, through them, I have found myself, my work, and my God."

Mark Twain-
"Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see."

 Harry Emerson Fosdick-
"Rebellion against your handicaps gets you nowhere. Self-pity gets you nowhere. One must have the adventurous daring to accept oneself as a bundle of possibilities and undertake the most interesting game in the world - making the most of one's best."

 Stevie Wonder-
“Handicaps are really to be used another way to benefit yourself and others.”

 Alexander de Seversky-
"I discovered early that the hardest thing to overcome is not a physical disability but the mental condition which it induces. The world, I found, has a way of taking a man pretty much at his own rating. If he permits his loss to make him embarrassed and apologetic, he will draw embarrassment from others. But if he gains his own respect, the respect of those around him comes easily."

Robert M. Hensel-
"I choose not to place "DIS", in my ability."

The role of faith in fighting with disability

soham satya- a 10 years old child, suffering from cerebral palsy , was decleared "the patient with no hope" by the doctors because of his exremely bad condition. His father, a resident of jehanabad( Bihar) rushed to almost every hospital located in state capital Patna but tragically, there was no facility to treat with these type of cases. Mr. satish sharma, a sincere devotee of Gayatri pariwar, took this case as a challenge and he followed the principles as said by-" gurudev shriram sharma Acharya". Later, he taken soham to, NIRTAR, a premier centre for disabled persons.Along with the treatment, he continued his rituals and now, everyone became surprised to see the improvent in the child. The father applied gayatri mantra and I.Q. of the child exceptionally improved. Now, he is a source of inspiration for all disabled childern. His case shows that there are infinite possibilities in our ancient sciences if we apply them in the disability field.

parsuram survived the battle

parsuram rout, 50 years old vendor, undergone accident and lost his right leg. Life became a misery for him because he was so poor to arrange for treatment. He became a subject of sympathy among the relatives and society and his life became limited to his home. When parsuram met me, he was nothing but a reservoir of depression and frustation. It taken a long time for me to win over his trust and when he was provided with the artificial leg, the things taken a  U turn. Now he has a positive vision towards life because he is now able to stand and walk with his own feet.

world bank report about Bihar

I have studied a recent report of world Bank in context to bihar( http://www.worldbank.org.in/ ). As a summary of this report, i have noted some points from the report which are important to know for each citizen of Bihar.

According to world bank, bihar is suffering from following root problems-
1. Persistent poverty
2. complex social stratification
3. Unsatisfactory basic infrastructure
4. corrupt  governance
The above problems are very well known but very less understood which makes the situation very much complex.
Now, What should be the solution of the above problems?
The world bank also provided the solution in its report-
1.Enhance the growth by improving the investment climate. It can be done by maintaining law and order, encouraging industry, investment and spread of technology in rural sector.

2. support human resorce development by proving improved social services e.g. education, health, electricity, food to the people.

3. Develop roads and infrastructure for water control. It will boost the agro-industry which has brilliant potential in bihar.

The above three are the most effective solutions according to the world bank as seems in its more than 100 pages long report.

Now, see what Bihar government is doing to tackle the problems ane acheive the solutions. The present government has done following good works-
1. Developing roads
2. spreaded the technology in rural agricultural sector
3. improved the primary education
4. launched innovative laws e.g. "right to service" for limiting corruption

There is little development in following areas-
1. electricity supply which is essential to develop industries
2. in health sector
3. in water resources management

The fight with the problems will be ,no doubt, continued by every govt. But one thing is certain, If we solve one problem, it will help us in solving other problems.

smile is the true fee

Keshab Das, a polio victim child, was unable to stand and walk like other normal children. His father is extremely poor to arrange for treatment. When the child met me, he questioned- will i be able to play with my friends? This was, indeed, a very tough question for me. I tried hard on his case in several phases and now he is able to stand and walk through the treatment provided at our centre. Now, keshab can fulfil the dream of playing with his friends.

a dream came true for gangadhar

Gangadhar, a 24 years old boy was living a compromising life when he lost his left leg in an accident. All his dreams were shattered. I tried hard on his case to make him stand and walk again with the help of artificial leg and the almighty god made us successful and Gangadhar was once again able to walk on his own feet. It was not less than a dream came true for him.

santosh walked once again

Mr. santosh seemed to be a little bit frustated when he met me because he had lost his leg and was incapable to walk. But, life changed for him once again when he was provided with the artificial leg. His confidence, shining on his face, was easily noticable for all of us.

patients who got a new life through modern technology

Mr. mohapatra, a govt. emloyee, lost his leg in an accident and the life became changed for him. But, thanks to modern technology, he can walk again on his own feet.

States/UTs-wise Disabled Population by Type of Disability and residence in census 2001

According to the Ministry of Social justice and Empowerment, GOI, the disabled population in bihar is as follows ( as in census 2001)-
total disabled population- 1887611
visual-1005605
speech-130471
hearing- 73970
locomotor-512246
mental- 165319

Although, the above data of 2001 census is irrelevent in 2011 end but if you compare the data with other states then you will find that bihar comes at second position in india in context of the disabled population. Indeed, much resources, manpower and will power is wanted if the govt. and other organizations want to see some positive results in disability rehabilitation.

what is disability?

when a common man listens the word "disabled" he imagines someone who is bound to live at the help of others and incapable to do the normal tasks but this imagination is only partially true.
Now the question arises- what is disability? and who should be called as disabled?
According to the World Health Organisation, a disability is…
any restriction or lack (resulting from any impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being”

In normal literature, two more words are used interchangebly to describe disability, these are-impairment and handicap. But , technically World Health Organisation  draws a three-fold distinction between impairment, disability and handicap, defined as follows. 'An impairment is any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or function; a disability is any restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being; a handicap is a disadvantage for a given individual, resulting from an impairment or a disability, that prevents the fulfilment of a role that is considered normal (depending on age, sex and social and cultural factors) for that individual'.

According to the United Nations Standard Rules on the equalization of Opportunities for Persons with disabilities:
  • The term "disability" summarizes a great number of different functional limitations occurring in any population in any country, of the world. People may be disabled by physical, intellectual or sensory impairment, medical conditions or mental illness. Such impairments, conditions or illnesses may be permanent or transitory in nature.
  • The term "handicap" means the loss or limitation of opportunities to take part in the life of the community on an equal level with others. It describes the encounter between the person with a disability and the environment. The purpose of this term is to emphasize the focus on the shortcomings in the environment and in many organized activities in society, for example, information, communication and education, which prevent persons with disabilities from participating on equal terms.
  • The use of the two terms "disability" and "handicap", as defined in the two paragraphs above, should be seen in the light of modern disability history. During the 1970s there was a strong reaction among representatives of organizations of persons with disabilities and professionals in the field of disability against the terminology of the time. The terms "disability" and "handicap" were often used in an unclear and confusing way, which gave poor guidance for policy-making and for political action. The terminology reflected a medical and diagnostic approach, which ignored the imperfections and deficiencies of the surrounding society.
  • In 1980, the World Health Organization adopted an international classification of impairments, disabilities and handicaps, which suggested a more precise and at the same time relativistic approach. The International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps(3) makes a clear distinction between "impairment", "disability" and "handicap". It has been extensively used in areas such as rehabilitation, education, statistics, policy, legislation, demography, sociology, economics and anthropology. Some users have expressed concern that the Classification, in its definition of the term "handicap", may still be considered too medical and too centred on the individual, and may not adequately clarify the interaction between societal conditions or expectations and the abilities of the individual. Those concerns, and others expressed by users during the 12 years since its publication, will be addressed in forthcoming revisions of the Classification.
  • As a result of experience gained in the implementation of the World Programme of Action and of the general discussion that took place during the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons, there was a deepening of knowledge and extension of understanding concerning disability issues and the terminology used. Current terminology recognizes the necessity of addressing both the individual needs (such as rehabilitation and technical aids) and the shortcomings of the society (various obstacles for participation).
The above discussion is no doubt boring and cumbersome . So, there is much need to simplify all of these.
In simplest terms, disability is a condition which makes a person weak in any aspect- physical or mental. A disabled person is that person who is suffering from the condition of disability.

disability condition in india from western view

whatever the indian govt. says and proves by their datas, truth cannt be hindered from the alert eyes. Please have a look from the website of handicapped international (http://www.handicap-international.org.uk which is a reputed international ngo in all over the world . on their site they have written this material about the condition of disability in india  .I have just simplified their points for easy understanding of our people of bihar.
Their comments should be eye opener for we indians-

  1. in india, the people with disabilities are excluded among the excluded.
  2. When it comes to the size of its population and extensive poverty, India holds some unenviable world records. More than 350 million people live on less than one dollar a day, including the vast majority of people with disabilities. 98% of children with disabilities do not go to school. In India, between 30 and 50 million people suffer from physical, sensorial or mental impairments, representing 3% to 5% of the population.

Key Facts - India

• Population: 1.21 billion
• Household Consumption: $1,324 per year
• Life Expectancy: 64 years
• Human Development: ranked 119th out of 169 countries
what does this means- very clear... we stand at 119th position out of 169 overall, you can easily imagine what the condition of disabled will be in india where the normal people is suffering the plight.
